Scop (Preferred Pronunciation: "Shop," or the Rhyming Word "Skop") The singer, or bard, for the mead hall. Sometimes the scop was attached to the court or to an aristocratic family. Sometimes he was a traveling singer who went from court to court. He was a tribal historian who remembered stories from the past and retold and recited them time after time. When the lord and his thanes listened to the valorous deeds of past heroes, their own sense of pride was strengthened. Often the scop used a contrasting story to reinforce a climactic deed for example, "The Lay of Sigemund," which is sung after Beowulf kills Grendel in order to liken Beowulf's feat to those of the mighty Sigemund.
The reveling continues until Hrothgar decides to go to bed; in a departing speech, he entrusts the mead hall to Beowulf's care, wishes him success, and leaves with his wife and band of warriors. After Hrothgar's departure, the poet comments that the most "Glorious of Kings" (God) has placed a hall-guard against Grendel; Beowulf, he says, trusts in God's will. Beowulf removes his iron armor and puts away his ornamented sword. " He adds that he will not Page 30 use any weapons in his combat with Grendel; he will fight Grendel on his own termsthat is, without sword or armor.
