In September 1927 Ruby Elzy entered the sophomore class at Ohio State University. By this time, Ruby had become a full member of the McCracken family. Earlier in the summer, just after Ruby’s arrival, Cleo McCracken had been stricken with a life-threatening illness.
Embarrassed, Hughes asked Ruby if she’d mind sitting in the back. She graciously agreed. A month later the same two students came again to see the director. “Dr. Hughes, we’d like to ask if you would apologize to Ruby for us. ” Ruby had triumphed once again over those who would mistreat her. When Ruby began attending Ohio State in 1927, there were three hundred students in the Department of Music, which was part of the College of Education. Although Ruby was planning for a career as a singer, her degree from the university would qualify her to teach public school—something that Miss Ella Becker back at Rust very much wanted her to do.
