Nelly is loath to disturb the serenity of the Grange, but Heathcliff urges her, saying "Go, and carry my message. " Nelly tells Catherine merely that she has a visitor from Gimmerton. When Catherine leaves the room, Edgar inquires who the visitor might be and Nelly tells him. Edgar refers to Heathcliff as a gypsy and a ploughboy and, calling through the window, he suggests that Catherine entertain Heathcliff in the kitchen. Furious, Catherine orders that two tables be set up in the parlor, one for Edgar and Isabella and the other for Heathcliff and herself.

At this point Mrs. Dean breaks off her narrative. Commentary This is one of the most dramatic and important chapters in the book. The spiritual bond between Catherine and Heathcliff is clearly shown. Despite this, she is prepared to betray Heathcliff and her own nature by accepting the superficial values of the Lintons. The dual sides of her nature are clearly exposed. Catherine's illness and the doctor's advice that she is never to be upset indicate the beginning of the breakdown of her constitution.

Mr. Lockwood is shocked at the hatred evident between Heathcliff and his daughter-in-law. While Heathcliff is out of the room, Mr. Lockwood again asks for help in returning to the Grange. No one bothers to make any suggestions. Mrs. Heathcliff reveals she is not allowed off the property. Joseph appears, and Mr. Lockwood is astounded when he chides the young Mrs. Heathcliff for being idle, saying she will never mend her evil ways and will go right to the devil like her mother. The girl terrifies him by saying she has been practicing the Black Art and threatens to make a wax and clay model of him.
