Why this is the case deserves much more attention than we can possibly afford it here. Suf¤ce it to say that the position taken here is that the sources of ethnic passion and power are highly varied. ) can be drawn upon in the process of perpetrating what is seen as ethnic violence or con®ict. Identities of ethnicity, gender, class, place, and so on, do not exist separate from one another. From this perspective, ethnicity can be seen to operate as an ideological principle articulating many strands of identity, passion, and interest in the production of con®ict and/or cooperation.
1996b: 142) The idea that social linkages are never necessary or obligatory is especially important if we are to see the social order of war as contingent in its construction, rather than as emerging inevitably from transhistorical, intrinsic, and absolute interests such as greed or essentialized and eternal ethnic identities. Hall reminds us that while any particular new arrangement of social linkages is not inevitable, it also is not wholly free of determinations. Each linkage becomes meaningful by bringing elements of historically speci¤c social formations into relation with each other, and when new articulations come about, those previous meanings may be engaged and transformed as well.
Thus our goal has been to articulate a technology of vision that takes the material into account but resists economic reductionism. For example, if Collier is right that greed plays a role in the reproduction of the con®ict, we contend it is our responsibility to treat that assessment not as a conclusion but rather as an opening to further questions. How and for whom does greed emerge within a speci¤c and contingent context of articulation? If we argue that the economy structurally adjusts identity, we need then to ask how, what identities, why those and not others?
