This may sound like my life was perfect and I was always happy, but that was definitely not the case. There were still times when I was made to feel my deafness; most of the time it wasn’t intentional, but the hurt was there just the same. For instance, once during break time a bunch of us were talking about the USO and the requests for women and girls to attend a dance they were having for the service boys. They needed someone to dance with and talk to. ” I said. ” she asked. “With our feet,” I said.
Anyway, I really enjoyed writing them. Some were still in the States, while others were in foreign countries. They would tell me about the people, their customs, and the food they ate. It was very interesting. Some were in the actual fighting and couldn’t say where they were. Sometimes they’d be in foxholes, wet and scared. One, whose letters I enjoyed the most, was Mickey. No matter where he was, he could always find something funny to write about and make you laugh. In one letter he wasn’t laughing because the girl he had left back home had died from food poisoning.
I’d be living and working among strangers, hearing strangers at that. I knew how hurtful some of them could be. Would I be able to work? I’d had no college education. I thought of all the pros and cons. Finally my mind tired of it all, and I decided to let it rest and just keep going until I saw how things would turn out. My adventurous spirit returned, and I felt better. It had begun to get light outside, and my smelly seatmate had gotten off sometime during the night. I started seeing things I recognized along the way, and I knew we were nearing Washington.
