After leaving his father’s home for the second time, he traveled to the village of Dumois, about sixteen miles to the south of Banes, a railroad town where he hoped to land a job. 8 It is here that he likely experienced homelessness for the first time. He lived for several weeks in and around the train station, more often than not sleeping on the floor or on a wooden bench.
When he was not at the train station, he spent his time at hangouts frequented by the railroad men, perhaps scrounging meals and playing occasional games of dice or dominoes. He engaged the men in conversation at every opportunity and sought to gain information about the Cuba beyond the -square-mile region that had been his entire world up to that point. The young Batista was fascinated by the railroading life and the promise of travel and escape. Like sailors, railroad men have a mythology of their own.
