Second, each succeeding element contains more lower-energy electrons, which shield or screen the outside electron from the nucleus. Because the outer electron in the alkalis is held so loosely, these elements have a strong tendency to ionize, wherein the electron is essentially captured by another element, leaving the alkalis as positively-charged ions (cations) with a +1 charge. The tendency of the alkalis to ionize has a profound effect on their behavior in water, as will be shown.
