Neorealism established the orthodox theory as a theory within social science. These overtones of positivist epistemology are part of the development of orthodox realist theory to neorealism. One important theory of this school is that of the hegemonic stability theory, which maintains that ‘for maintaining freer trade and a liberal flow of capital and aid … leadership is necessary in the absence of delegated authority’ (Kindleberger 1973: 307). The theory advocates a single-country control of international regimes whose relations are regulated by agreed rules.
