The proponents of this challenge were no longer satisfied with the belief that Apartheid was in conformity with the faith of the Universal Christian Church. Such instrumentalization of religion in politics had a long history stretching back to the introduction of Islam in the country and the invasion of Arab peoples of the area. We had also seen how the Mahdi married religion and politics in carrying out his campaign. Perhaps in line with this precedent and tradition, the independence of the Sudan from Britain in 1956 introduced a marked emphasis in the policies and politics of the governments that exercised power in the country. In line with Garang’s thinking, Francis Deng observed, “Since independence, ruthless attempts to dominate, Islamize and Arabize the South have characterized the process of successive governments” (Deng 1995: 11, 36; Waihenya 2006: 56; Johnson 2003: 35).

This also affected the Muslims in the south. Any Muslim who was in one way or another associated with or participated in the war on the side of the south was also regarded as being outside the Muslim faith, an apostate. Once the war was viewed in religious terms, all those who had a hand in the conflict were divided on 26 H o ly Wa r r i o r s , In f i d e l s , P e ac e m a k e r s religious grounds. A fatwa (excommunication) was promulgated in 1992 by religious scholars against any Muslim who stood on the side of the struggle in the south.
