Isami’s father had left the early education of his firstborn son in the hands of Daisuke. From the age of five, Isami had lived with his great-grandparents in the separate retirement cottage on the family’s grounds. His first four years of compulsory education were taken at the “simple, easy [village] school” that Daisuke had founded. When Isami demonstrated greater ability as a student than his father had shown, Daisuke, having, in Isami’s view, a “very progressive, action-oriented personality,” considered sending him to Tokyo for his higher education.
It had an earthen floor and occupied nine hundred square feet on the ground level. Even after a more modern, smaller kitchen was installed inside the house in the north wing, this huge original kitchen, with its high ceiling to allow the smoke from the stove to disperse, was used for making special holiday fare, such as rice cakes and rice mixed with red beans, or for preparing food for large numbers of guests. Although in recent times the original kitchen was converted to a garage and storage room, it still contains a well for drawing water, a wood-burning stove with two burners, and a large wooden counter extending from the step leading up into the main living area.
The kotatsu, a sunken footwarmer filled with hot coals and covered with a heavy quilt, was the only other source of heat. Portable screens helped keep out drafts in cold weather. Family members (including, in the early 1900s, Isami’s numerous siblings) ate, studied, played, and slept in the large living area. Children slept alongside one another in the middle of the room on bedding stored in built-in closets during the day and spread out on the tatami at night. Servants slept behind them, on the periphery.
