They began to search for a house large enough for a family of eight in West Baltimore and found one in Windsor Hills, a house on the edge of Gwynns Falls Park.

18 Clifton’s three earliest works were published by Random House, the same New York firm that released Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1970 and that continues to publish Angelou’s poetry and prose today. In 1980, with Two-Headed Woman, Clifton moved from the prestigious publisher, Random House, because she believed that a small press was more likely to keep a book of poetry in print. She first placed her books with the University of Massachusetts Press and later with BOA Editions.
