Mac OS X Rears Its Head In 2000, the first Mac OS X preview was made available to the general public. 0, was shipped. Jobs’ promise of an operating system that would take the Macintosh into the future while maintaining compatibility with older Mac OS software was realized. Mac OS X 36 History of Apple, the Macintosh, and Mac OS X had a rocky start, but Apple worked diligently on stabilizing the operating system and released regular patches. 2 “Jaguar” in August 2001, Apple had accomplished its goal of a stable, reliable operating system that would serve as a good replacement for the venerable Mac OS.
It was, of course, the Macintosh. Changes Are Brewing Present-day computers mainly differ in the type of operating system that they run. There are two major choices in personal computers: Unix and Windows. The Unix choices include Linux and Mac OS X. Computer architecture is either Intel or PowerPC. There aren’t many different options, and while that seems limiting, it’s actually a good thing because it helps standards move along and it makes business decisions regarding information technology a little easier.
Today, you can choose a PC running either Windows or a Unix variant (or Unix-like OS, such as Linux), or you can choose a Macintosh. In 1984, when the Macintosh debuted, there were many choices in the personal computer market. While today’s computer owners will talk about their Linux machines or Macs or Windows boxes, in 1984 people had Apples and IBMs, not to mention all kinds of other computers that no longer exist, like Commodore. In 1984, you could go to Computerworld or any other boutique computer store and buy a Commodore VIC-20, a Commodore 64, a Radio Shack TRS-80, an Atari ST, a Zenith Z-100, an IBM PC XT, or any of the computers running the CP/M OS on a Zilog Z-80, Motorola 68000, Intel 8088, or Synertek 6502.
