Most scholars consider Hipparchus to be the greatest observational astronomer of the ancient Greek world. He was born in Nicaea, in Bithynia (modern northwestern Turkey), but, like so many other Greek scientists, migrated to Alexandria. e. Hipparchus’s unique achievement was the creation of a catalogue of nearly one thousand stars.
