At the very least, he is determined to give the gift of his grave and with it the power of his blessing, to the city he himself chooses Athens. In response, the elders side with Oedipus, whom they now see as innocent of sin, although cursed by ill fortune. Their change in judgment begins the preparation for Oedipus’ apotheosis—elevation to divine status—at the end of the play. Note, too, that Creon’s character in this play contrasts sharply with the reasonable Creon of Oedipus the King. In this scene, Creon starts with a hypocritical, duplicitous speech to Oedipus and ends with hostage-taking and threats of war.
He leads Theseus, Ismene, and Antigone into a hidden part of the grove and ritually prepares for death. Only Theseus, however, actually witnesses the end of Oedipus’ life. Since Oedipus’ final resting place is at Colonus, Athens receives his blessing and protection, and Thebes earns his curse. At the conclusion of the play, Antigone and Ismene return to Thebes, hoping to avert the war and civil strife. 34 CliffsNotes Sophocles’ Oedipus Trilogy List of Characters Oedipus Former king of Thebes, now a blind beggar who wanders from place to place.
After rejecting Tiresias angrily, Creon reconsiders and decides to bury Polynices and free Antigone. But Creon’s change of heart comes too late. Antigone has hanged herself and Haemon, in desperate agony, kills himself as well. On hearing the news of her son’s death, Eurydice, the queen, also kills herself, cursing Creon. 56 CliffsNotes Sophocles’ Oedipus Trilogy Alone, in despair, Creon accepts responsibility for all the tragedy and prays for a quick death. The play ends with a somber warning from the chorus that pride will be punished by the blows of fate.
