Thus, Whitefield endeavored to make himself worthy of his calling in the only way he knew how, dedicating himself to every aspect of religious duty available to him. Yet this performance of duty did not resolve his inner tension or settle his sense of identity.

Whitefield departed on January 2, 1738, and arrived in Georgia in May after a voyage filled with delays due to inclement weather. His stay in Georgia, although not without some points of interest, was brief and largely uneventful (May 7 to September 4, 1738).
