The hiring of the first African American to a tenure-track position at a prestigious white college (Dunbar grad Allison Davis, who was appointed to the University of Chicago faculty in 1942) was a decade away. Since the turn of the century, all of the department’s own hires had been its own students, but even though he was among the best students in his class, it does not appear that the faculty ever considered keeping Weaver in Cambridge. In later years, Preparing the Talented Tenth * 29 the Harvard economics department would add several assistant professors (most of whom were not Harvard graduates), but Weaver’s job opportunities were limited to black colleges.
But he struggled with several aspects of the program, particularly German (in which he received an E). By his own account, Weaver enjoyed the freedom of being so far from his mother too 22 * CHAPTER ONE much during his freshman year. ” By the end of the year, Weaver was on academic probation, and he lost his scholarship aid. 35 In the spring of 1926, Weaver decided to transfer out of the School of Engineering to the liberal arts college. In 1928, Weaver participated in what many blacks at the time called the “wedding of the century,” the marriage of Yolande DuBois, only child of W. E. B. DuBois, and poet Countee Cullen, son of one of the nation’s most famous black ministers. In 1928 the two were married in front of 1,500 people at Salem Methodist Church in Harlem. Weaver was one of ten groomsmen (there were fifteen bridesmaids), joining several of the leading lights of the Harlem Renaissance, including Arna Bontemps and Langston Hughes.
