My mother agrees and tells him that she is in a hurry to have them. They shake hands, and he assures her that they will be ready before the end of summer, in time for the High Holidays. We leave and continue on our trip. We stop at the photographer’s studio. The studio is in a small, dimly lit, store. Several props are positioned in various places: a table with flowers on it; a tall cardboard column that looks like it’s made of marble, a mural of a lake with trees bordering it with a real bench in front of the painted scene, and several articles of clothing hanging on a clothes tree.

Every official who has ever done business with my grandfather or uncles shrugs his shoulders when we ask about Herzl. He has vanished. Where is my Uncle Herzl? I still have a picture of him in my mind. He is tall, slender, wearing a beige suit with a waist coat, his straight brown hair is combed back off his high forehead, and white eyebrows and lashes frame the bluest of eyes. A slow smile spreads across his whole face making his eyes crinkle at the corners whenever he comes into the room. He is the only one of my uncles who does not have a beard.

Stanislav lifts me and Bubbi and helps my mother onto the soft leather seats. We snuggle under the warm fur blankets while he tosses our luggage in the back and mounts the high seat in front. He clicks his tongue and the horses respond toward an unknown destination. The horses plod along, their heads bobbing up and down in time with their feet, while the little silver bells strung around their necks tinkle.
