The lengthy conceit of Juliet's body as a holy shrine, lips as pilgrims, hands as holy palmers and sins purged is so alien to the students' cultures that anything that draws attention to the profoundly religious foundation of the play is a bonus. By using the language of religion in lay terms for furthering their intimacy, Romeo and Juliet are being outrageous right from the start, but at the same time giving expression to the idea of the body as temple. We stress that although Shakespeare, and Luhrmann, use a specifically Christian (Catholic) context, the story is universal and will appear independently of Shakespeare's play in various guises in other classic literatures and in other languages.
The response was heartening. One student wrote: 'I LOVED IT! I really enjoy drama and I jump at the chance to make people laugh! I think we work well as a group and together we produce some excellent pieces of drama! ' I find it significant that it is their drama work that Year 9 students seem most readily to recall from their Year 6 days. Most pupils wishing to become involved in the intricacies of the language need to have a firm grasp of the series of events leading to Duncan's death. One way of achieving this quickly is to show part of the popular cartoon version, but another is for the teacher to have placards of the characters' names and to recount the story, while calling upon some pupils to represent particular characters. Using students as chess pieces that can be moved around makes for an interesting narrative discourse.
