I organize this discussion by genre—the lines that purport to divide literary texts and contexts. I do this in order to illustrate the degree to which Le Guin’s generic contexts evince the same narrative strategies to achieve or deny character relationships. Do the vertical lines actually divide, or are they simply different contexts, more parallels, for the same line? 2 Most often the external narrator in a Le Guin novel will look (or “focalize”) through two or three characters. Characters speak for themselves infrequently.

The memory of characters important in grounding Falk and defining his purpose makes his situation much like those of the other “spies” Shevek and Sutty, though that influence is explored much less in this novel, and the mission remains rather abstract and impersonal.
