89 24 CliffsNotes Virgil’s Aeneid Book I Summary Virgil begins his epic poem with a succinct statement of its theme: He will sing of war and the man—Aeneas—who, driven by fate, sailed from Troy’s shores to Italy, where he founded a city called Lavinium, the precursor of Rome. Why, Virgil asks, appealing to the muse of epic poetry, does Juno, the queen of the gods, harass such a good man? He mentions two explicit reasons for Juno’s hostility: her love for Carthage and corresponding hatred for the future Rome, which is destined to overthrow her favorite city; and her lingering resentment because Paris, a Trojan, did not award her the golden apple, the prize given to the most beautiful woman in the world.
Here, in Book II, he demonstrates the appropriate pietas—devotion to one’s family, country, and mission—for his father and again for his son. When Anchises refuses to vacate his house, nobly choosing instead to commit suicide, Aeneas breaks down in tears and cries out that he could never leave his father. Aeneas is unwilling to abandon him, knowing that Greek warriors could break into the house at any moment and slaughter the man who gave him life. His deep respect for Anchises is best demonstrated by his physically carrying him through Troy’s streets to the rendezvous point.
Ignorantly, Anna does as Dido requests, believing that the queen’s grief is no greater than that which she suffered over her husband’s death. On top of the newly built pyre, Dido places a couch heaped with Aeneas’s clothing, a portrait of him, and his sword, with which she plans to kill herself. That night, Dido sleeplessly considers her plight. Having ruled out the alternatives of marrying one of her former suitors or following the Trojans, she reaffirms her decision to commit suicide. Meanwhile, Aeneas, asleep aboard his ship and ready to sail the next day, is again visited by Mercury, who appears to him in a dream and commands him to flee while flight is still possible.
