Radiometric techniques, based upon the known rates of decay of radioactive atoms, have been used to divine the age of these ancient rock formations. By the time these rocks had been formed, the Earth had developed an iron core, and the dynamo motions in the molten outer sector of this core produced a magnetic field and a radiation-shielding magnetosphere (Cloud, 1988:44). While the Earth had been fully formed some 4 billion years ago, this was not the end of its development, only its beginning.
And, while it is true that the prevailing rhythms and punctuating surges of Earth’s crustal and biologic evolution denote the flow of planetary history at a given place or region, time continues unaffected. The history of the Earth is ever-changing and it pulsates to the rhythms generated by the beginning of the Universe itself. A study of the physical history of the Earth involves a study of plate tectonics—the changing location of the main landmasses or continents and the forces that move them.
The last millennium is no exception: the period AD 950 to AD 1100 was relatively warm enabling, amongst other things, the settlement of Greenland; there was a distinct cold phase, following moderate fluctuations, in the mid-fifteenth century; this was followed by another warmer period from 1470 to 1560; then from 1560 until 1850 there was the ‘little ice age’ (Loyn, 1989:93; Grove, 1990). Since the mid-nineteenth century we have enjoyed a warmer climatic phase. 34 GAME OF LIFE Only some of the warmer phases during the last millennium coincided with upswings in European GDP per capita during the eleventh and sixteenth centuries.
