She never flaunted the things that her parents were able to provide for her. 22 T H E FA R M I tried not to compare what I had to what other families had, and it worked out well when I was surrounded by my family and my cousins.

Compared to them, I thought I was the ugly duckling in the family. My hair was short, coarse, and hard to manage, whereas my brothers had soft and wavy hair that was easy to comb. They also had the most beautifully shaped eyebrows. As every black woman knows (even to this day), a young girl’s hair shapes her self-image far more than it should. I just didn’t have “good” hair. Good hair was defined as straight; “bad” hair was defined as kinky. It was most unfortunate. The only thing that saved me was that I loved to read.
