The cultural experience of India did little to broaden his personal understanding of the contributions of foreign peoples and cultures. Perhaps it is unreasonable to expect that Hurley would transcend the cultural biases of his time, but his imposition of colonial stereotypes onto the Catholic faithful reveals a psychology that allowed him to categorize religions according to race and culture.
