For welding in position, that is other than the flat position where weld beads form under the action of gravity, a voluminous and slightly viscous slag helps to hold the weld metal where it is required. In high-speed vertical-down welding as employed for welding pipelines too much slag can interfere with welding by running ahead of the pool and an electrode producing minimal slag such as the cellulosic electrode is often used. When welding in deep grooves with many weld passes it is important that the slag is easily removed otherwise the quality of the weld will be affected with slag inclusions and possible associated lack of fusion.
Of the two, rotational distortion is the more noticeable and can be minimised by making the weld bead symmetrical about the neutral axis or by having a parallel sided single pass weld, as with electron-beam welding. Overall distortion can be reduced by limiting the heat used to make the weld. The more intense the heat source and the faster the welding the less heat is conducted into the surrounding material so in any given joint the distortion is greatest when Fig. 13 Longitudinal distortion. MMA welding with AC transformers is the cheapest option as far as equipment cost is concerned and the plant is remarkably robust. Most, though not all electrodes for steel work on AC and many actually provide easier welding than on DC. This is true for the high efficiency iron powder electrodes especially in large diameters. The major advantage of AC is the absence of arc blow which can be encountered when using DC. Only AC can be used for the gravity welding process (see later), however, many non-ferrous electrodes and certain highly alloyed steel types will not operate on AC.
