But it was soon discovered that the Grid (again, in common with some of the psychoanalytic tools that preceded it and also with those which followed it in time) had more than its share of limitations. 5 Also, the implicit dimensions of intensity and time have been difficult for many people to realise. It became noticeable (even in Bion’s time, a fact detected by him) how a great many students of his work seemed to be imprisoned by the representational formulation of the Grid—which seemed to them, thanks to its form, something like a prison.

The vertical axis consists of lettered rows, a psychogenesis of thinking processes. Those categories historicise thought processes within a continuum: from less developed to developed classes (science and algebraic calculus). Rows A, B and C “shelter” or indicate, respectively: β elements; α elements; myths, dreams and dream thoughts. They evolve from a “de-sensifying” to a “de-concretisation”. Human beings are able to catch a limited (but good enough for some tasks) range of stimuli, external or internal.

6 a richer picture emerges, diminishing the overloading of categories A and B and spraying the intensity over other categories from Row C. The functioning of the three-dimension Grid, like the mental apparatus, can be seen in an entropic equilibrium between the many categories, under Fechner’s principle of homeostasis, quoted by Freud in his model of the mental apparatus. This pre-psychoanalytic work, or would-be-psychoanalytic work, or pretending-to-be-analytic work, which could not yet be called psychoanalytic work, now had a chance to become that.
