We KPs were permitted to eat after the completion of the third sitting of each meal. One morning at the KPs' breakfast I met a fellow worker named Richard Murray. Murray was a big Irishman from Wisconsin via Cut Bank, Montana. My first encounter with Murray was an unfriendly one. The casus belli was Murray's charge that I had committed an unpardonable violation of mess hall procedure. S. (creamed chipped beef on toast) and then failing to hold it up so the working KPs could see and refill it. Whether I was actually innocent or guilty I do not remember, but I vehemently denied it and pretended to hold my ground.
After the third check, he became irritable. Suddenly it dawned on me that none of my tickets had been properly processed. When I showed my ticket to the conductor, he really boiled over and screamed at me. In return, I became angry and dared him to put me off the train. For a moment I thought he was going to do it, but he soon cooled off.
