We went back to eating, and ten seconds later Mike jumps right out of his seat. ” I whirled around, saw nothing. ” All of a sudden I wasn’t hungry. I felt a little cold. ” I said. ” He was pointing to the corner of the kitchen. ” “Yeah. Behind it, I think, or under it. ” My voice wasn’t working right. ” I pulled my feet up to the rung of my chair. Mike grabbed the broom. He stalked over toward the wastebasket, holding the broom handle out like a sword.
I leaned over, opened my mouth, and let the oatburger blob, fall into the basket. He took it away. The other stuff on my plate was candied sweet potatoes, string beans, and something I didn’t recognize, little brown clumps. Mrs. Webb saw me looking. “They’re breaded mushrooms. ” I tried one. It was delicious. ” she said. I shrugged. ” Four grown-up eyeballs landed on me. I had to think quick. ” I said. ” I didn’t wait for an answer. I jumped from the table and went behind their sofa. I dived over the back of it, landed on my head and hands on the cushion, pushed off, swung my feet around, and landed on the floor.
