It is important to add that Lacan does not consider the symbolic or language as a super-structure or as an abstraction, but rather as a reality which pre-exists the subject and determines the reality of the subject as a spoken reality.
In Lacan's early texts, that is until the mid-1950s, the imaginary register predominates and the image's formative function for the subject is in the foreground.
