This is not to say that we search for the writer’s absolute autonomy vis-à-vis the writer’s historical context. 1 If literature is a product of its time, it also produces its time, making the task in this introduction an arduous one.
In the story, an expecting father facing the impossibility of providing for his growing family turns to slave catching, a deeply stigmatized line of work even at the time. After a prolonged lack of success, he pursues, via wanted ads, a runaway female slave, eventually apprehending her. The slave, who is also expecting, ultimately loses the child. Machado closes the story with a memorable line delivered by the narrator, reflecting the perversity of slavery: “Not all babies have the luck to be born” (1966, 112).
As this trend continues, new Machado students and scholars continue to emerge, shifting our perceptions of the past (of both Brazil and history in general) and our understandings of literature. Despite Machado’s growing reputation among anglophone readers and in academic circles, there had yet to be a collection of essays published in English dedicated entirely to his life and work. The closest project to such a volume was Machado de Assis: Reflections on a Brazilian Master Writer edited by Richard Graham and published in 1999.
