In this moment, there were critical points when individual desires lined up but also could never match up with the collective aims of the New Negro moment. Ida B. Wells held on dearly to Victorian ideals of respectability and decorum while supporting the brash displays of black beauty culture and race films. Booker T. Washington both publicly advocated the Atlanta Compromise and privately funded self-defense initiatives in the Jim Crow South. Du Bois was heavily critical of Marcus Garvey’s brand of black economic nationalism, but by the 1930s, he pushed for the creation of consumer networks to drive a semiautonomous black economic system.

Though many, especially radicals, were critical of Emperor Haile Selassie’s monarchal regime, New Negroes fought to defend one of the few countries that had pushed back against the European scramble after the Berlin Conference. In the name of Ethiopia, thousands of men sought to join the royal army, defense committees raised money, dockworkers blocked shipments, and many more took to the streets. Protests and support groups erupted in cities all over the world to support the “Scottsboro Boys,” making the fight against racism, imperialism, and a looming fascism all part of the same struggle. A few years later, black fair-housing activists in Chicago and Los Angeles began to use the specifically Jewish notion of “ghetto” to shed light on the racist, New Deal state–sponsored, and hence fascist, conditions of residential and economic segregation. 27 An “Abyssinian International” of protest and agitation best crystalized the link between racism, imperialism, and a global fascism.
