His study of Freud began in 1919 with The Interpretation of Dreams and continued until his death in 1964. In 1921, while still a medical student, he began analysis with Dr Ernest Connell three to five times per week from July of that year probably until the end of December 1922. Connell was an Australian, who came to Edinburgh in 1920 and practised psychoanalysis there from 1921.
