Within the nineteenth century, the background of philosophy turns into the background of a specific technology. smooth philosophical historiography is an ambivalent undertaking. at the one hand, we discover an affirmative notion of Bildung via culture and historic perception; at the different, there arises a severe mirrored image on historic schooling within the mild of an rising critique of contemporary tradition. Example text

The contributions in the present volume elaborate the questions of what philosophical historiography in its classical epoch between Hegel and Windelband, was and what it could be today, through the critical examination of the 19th century authors. Here, then, the question of the appropriate sensitivity to contexts joins the question of historicity. The analysis of the conditions of the production of philosophical-historical texts (1–3) needs to be complimented by the consideration of appropriate conditions for their reception.

For, according to Hegel it is itself a fact of history [Geschichte] that the historiography of philosophy has become possible and necessary in the present. In the historiography of philosophy, the progressive condition of the history of philosophy, the historical self-explication of spirit is depicted. In The History of Philosophy as Progress towards a System of Reason Martin Bondeli provides a precise representation of Kant, Reinhold and Hegel’s philosophical-historical remarks so as to bring out the genesis of a concept of a rational history of philosophy.

30 In the 19th century, as the result of the collapse of the great systems, the history of philosophy retroactively paints a picture of a continual struggle, a struggle which clearly dominates the scene most especially at its peak and turning point. Two elements, according to Eucken, are necessary for the formation of partisanship in philosophy. First the conflict between the parties must represent different sides and levels in the matter itself—for without a factual basis we would be dealing with mere “cliques” says Eucken.
