Only a very small portion of the southeast is drained by streams flowing into the northern tributaries of the Congo River system. Though Gabon has many waterways, most of them are cut at various points by falls and rapids, which make large portions of them unnavigable. For example, the Ogooué though 1,200 km. in length, is navigable without interruption only one-third of this distance, that is, from the estuary to the island of N'Djolé. These rivers flow through a terrain whose relief can be separated into three regions of unequal area: plains, plateaux, and mountains.
