On receiving the news of the death President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945) on April 12, 1945, Smuts introduced a motion in Parliament to send condolences to President Harry S. Truman (1884–1972). Malan and his Nationalist Party refused to support the motion because they argued that the action might establish a precedent and some day they would be asked to send condolences for Joseph Stalin (1879–1953), the Russian dictator from 1928 to 1953.
