Seymour is the most admirable character in Salinger's fiction, a fact well developed in Salinger's latest efforts, for in him is combined the intellect of a genius and the moral sensitivity and compassion of a Buddhist monk; his six years with Muriel ("Miss Spiritual Tramp of 1948") have been a failure. The marriage has been six years of tigerish pride, vanity, and selfishness, in which their souls and the spiritual communion of their marriage have melted, like Sambo's tigers, into rancid nothingness.
X's mother-in-law is "Mother Grencher" who admits to being fifty-eight; Seymour's is Mrs. Fedder, who, from her description at least, seems to be somewhat younger. And X has an older brother in Albany; whereas Seymour is unmistakably the oldest of the seven Glass children. Sergeant X cannot be Seymour Glass, although both are avatars of the "hero" who reappears in Salinger's fiction. Salinger is fond of unifying his fiction through characters who reappear, sometimes surreptitiously, from one story to another; but present evidence makes it impossible to identify Sergeant X with Seymour Glass, the emergent focal character of the Salinger canon.
