Bruner, 1985, pp. g. Wertsch, 1985a, 1985b; Bruner, 1986; Newman, Griffin and Cole, 1989; Wood, 1988; Crook, 1991). One element of this research is the examination of how (and how well) teachers ‘scaffold’ children’s learning through interaction (Mercer, 1991; Maybin, Mercer and Stierer, 1992). There is more than one level to this examination. At one level, an examination of scaffolding may be largely concerned with what might be called ‘presentational’ issues—how and when teachers introduce new ideas into discourse, how they contextualise new information in terms of past experience, and so on.

The most effective role might be that of a senior Civil Servant. Address members of the cabinet as ‘Madam’ or ‘Sir’. It is most important that your presence is unobtrusive. The more ‘invisible’ you are the better the pupils will react to the situation unfolding in front of them. It would be a disaster for their developing confidence if you were to make direct suggestions or try to take a part in discussion—however badly you were tempted. Keep out, keep neutral as far as you possibly can. Your role as a Civil Servant will allow you to wander in and out of the Cabinet Room, and visit the Press Room without arousing undue attention.

The main point we can make here is that socio-cultural theory draws particular attention to the ways in which talk and joint activity are used by teachers and learners to share knowledge. As mentioned earlier, there is still very little in the way of educational software development which shows the influence of this theory. One promising exception is the work of McMahon and O’Neill, described in Chapter 3. Another (of which we have less direct knowledge) is work in the USA by Newman and Goldman (1987), who have created a classroom environment, Theories of learning and information technology 25 called ‘Earth Lab’, in which children can use computers in the same sorts of way that scientific researchers do, to collect data and then collectively analyse it and communicate their findings.
