One could call it ‘virtual’ (Virilio, 1994) or ‘artifactual’ (Derrida, 2002), but the central issue remains the same: neither is it separated by the actual political process, nor is it a mere representation of it, nor is it a mise-en-scène for the audience. On the contrary, this process is part of the actual political process: the same actors make it and it develops in the media environment.

Moreover, media operations during the two conflicts are suitable for comparison, since in both cases the same state actor (the United States) takes the initiative and assumes the responsibility for the intervention (even if in two different contexts – that is one within NATO and one within an informal bilateral alliance with the United Kingdom). The selection of the relevant actors for each conflict has also been guided by a comparative rationale together with, obviously, the criterion of historical relevance.

It explains that in our societies war has become an essentially mediated experience and that the sign of war has become even more important than the war on the ground. However, scholars using this concept do not stress enough that not only the public’s, but also decision-makers’ understanding of war is filtered by the images they consume. They may also have a more direct and un-mediated experience of a conflict, but they are not external to cultures and societies where mediatization takes place.
