By the end of the 1990s, the Augustenborg residential area faced social and economic problems as well as physical degradation of buildings and outdoor areas. At this point, Malmö decided that a large-scale renovation of the neighborhood was necessary. At the same time, it was decided that this should be done with an ecological approach, turning the area into an EcoCity. The refurbishment project was co-ordinated by Malmö and financed by the city together with MKB, the Swedish Government and the EU Life fund.
Each recycling building was equipped with structures for on-site separation of electronic/electrical equipment waste (e-waste), hazardous waste, and fat, oils, and grease (FOG).
