Anderson’s position is most closely approximated by Fredric Jameson. Indeed, in its more thoroughgoing and philosophically self-conscious totalising impetus, Jameson’s work foregrounds and accentuates the Hegelianised conception of Marxism as an unsurpassable 28 IN THE CRACKS OF HISTORICAL MATERIALISM horizon which underlies many of Anderson’s formulations in spite of the stress he places on the empirical temper of historical inquiry. This is particularly true of The Political Unconscious in its vision of a ‘pac-man Marxism’ capable of gobbling up everything in its path, ingesting structuralism, post-structuralism and deconstruction, correcting their errors while preserving their valuable insights in a seemingly unstoppable, ever-onward dialectical movement of synthesis and transcendence.

The plural and multifarious character of contemporary social struggles has finally dissolved the last foundation for that political imaginary. Peopled with ‘universal’ subjects and conceptually built around History in the singular, it has postulated ‘society’ as an intelligible structure that could be intellectually mastered on the basis of certain class positions and reconstituted, as a rational, transparent order, through a founding act of a political character. 24 In summary, then, post-Marxism constitutes a theoretical and political space which ‘goes beyond’ Marxism in terms both of the forms of politics and of the modes of theorising to which it is committed.

This, to be sure, occasions difficulties, but particular ones which, depending on the purpose of the inquiry, are susceptible to particular resolutions without the need for any overarching theory of the relations between literature and history understood as generalities. While Widdowson acknowledges the different evidential procedures and problems implied by his two formulations, what is of interest here is the way he then proceeds to reduce these to a common general problem: the problematic nature of our access to the past.
