Of course, one can never really know in any absolute sense exactly what happened in childhood 25 Reason and Passion (powerful envious impulses sometimes arise from deprivation and at other times seem to be the cause of it) but, for Segal it is important to be able to think about these distinctions and clarify them as far as one can.

Segal’s stress on the tripartite nature of symbolism has brought important links with the oedipal situation, which Bion and others have subsequently developed. Segal has described how in the analytic situation there is an inherent triangularity - the analyst, the patient and the words. In one seminar we were discussing another analyst’s patient, who was very ill. He was the oldest of a large Irish family and before he was a year old his first sibling arrived, to be followed by 6 others in quick succession. The analyst had shown how whenever he made contact with the patient the patient immediately transformed this into an experience of violent intrusion.
