The Mount Zion group (San Francisco) and response to interpretations The Mount Zion Research Group in San Francisco (later known as the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group), established by Joseph Weiss and Harold Sampson (Weiss and Sampson 1986, Sampson 1992), attempted during the 1970s and 1980s to research therapeutic process in the clinic including the use of clinical observation of in-session process. Their research started with a new psychoanalytic theory, and the ensuing attempt to find rigorous clinical evidence that establishes this theory as superior to competing theories.

This was derived from Freud’s (1912) notion of the ‘transference pattern’. Luborsky (1976) eventually identified the core conflict relationship theme (CCRT) as a practical way of operationalising the concept of transference. This was measured from a series of ‘relationship events’ and subcategorised as three components: (a) the patient’s wishes/needs towards the other; (b) the responses of that other; and (c) the responses of the self. The CCRT can be assessed on transcripts of single sessions (even on published material, as Luborsky and Crits-Christoph (1988) demonstrated).
