I would like to highlight that some of these ‘passages’ may be, in and of themselves, therapeutic ‘provisions,’ ‘actions,’ ‘tools,’ and ‘factors,’ in the sense that, correspondingly: a They describe phases of the treatment. b They are part of methodical, planned care. c They require a series of concrete facilitating interventions by the analyst. d They constitute a technical system. e They function as transformative efforts.
Even self-disclosure, the chosen battleground for many analysts who have had different training and come from different theoretical perspectives, is an event that comes to be refigured, to a substantial degree, if considered with enough critical serenity. By chance, I happened to be the discussant for a paper of Owen Renik’s (1995) on three separate occasions (see also Sechaud, 2000) at professional meetings where the subject of self-disclosure was discussed, and I must say that, although there were divergences at the beginning regarding basic technical orientation, after a long and involved discussion, we ended up converging on many significant points.
Yet at times we find ourselves facing the possibility of granting, or not, a certain degree of objective dignity of its own to a figure that can begin to exist in the external world and in the patient’s internal one, in continuity with the transference – of which, certainly, it is an extension. On the basis of its characteristics of continuing existence and substance, it gradually gains a different status, an autonomous right of citizenship in the patient’s life and in the treatment scenario. A classic case, in this sense, is evident in the way of treating the patient’s development of loving feelings in analysis.
