Two categories Schematically, it seems to me possible, and practical, to distinguish these two categories of abandonic. The first is the subject who is inconsolably stricken by resentment for not having been loved, whom I call “negative-repulsive”; the second is the patient who, above all, must find love, whom I have named “positive-attractive”.
Example 9: Miss A, aged twenty-two, made a striking first impression, not only was she chic and outwardly charming, but also presented a certain distance, hidden beneath a hardened exterior. Obsessed by feelings of abandonment that circumstances of her childhood strongly justify, Miss A is not consciously aware of the feminine qualities she possesses; rather, her bitterness has led to the utter conviction that she is unable to attract others, is badly groomed, and has no taste; what is more, she believes herself unintelligent, which is far from the truth, and dares only to express such deeply held feelings to a rare few who are capable of creating a climate of reassurance and security.
The less belief there is in the self, the greater the reasons that are found to doubt. In certain patients, these negative comparisons can constitute a very real barrier to treatment that the analyst must work to remove from the outset, if the analysand is to concentrate on the self rather than the countless objects of negative comparison that have been encountered between sessions.
