The Silmarillion means “the history of the Silmarils” (the three large precious stones). After a complicated editorial task based on a vast body of notes, sketches, intricate versions, and independent stories, Christopher published his father´s book, The Silmarillion, in 1977.

In the following quotation from the essay (pp. 229–30), Tolkien explains that children are capable of “literary belief,” a state of mind called “willing suspension of disbelief” by the poet C. T. Coleridge in his Biographia Literara (1817). ” He makes a Secondary World which your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates is “true”: it accords with the laws of that world.
