Der Stuhl rollte vorwärts, und jeder Stoß und jedes Tal in der Landschaft nahmen ihm den Atem. Er war immer noch einige Meter vom nächsten Mineneingang entfernt. Warum war er nur so unvorsichtig gewesen, zu einer Zeit, zu der man mit Regen rechnen mußte, allein zur Oberfläche hinunterzufahren? Der Regenschauer wurde dichter und schlug überall um ihn herum auf der Oberfläche ein.
Er hatte eigentlich nur zwei Probleme: Hunger und Durst… Gleich nachdem er sein Versteck im Laub bezogen hatte, war ein Malheur passiert. Einer der Arbeiter des Gürtels war über seinen kärglichen Proviantvorrat gestolpert; im Glauben, daß dieser Vorrat den verhaßten Besatzungsmitgliedern des Floßes gehörte, hatte er die Bissen unter seinen Kameraden aufgeteilt. Der Maulwurf bewegte einen Arm von seiner Nase weg. Er griff damit in die Körbe auf seinem Rücken und begann, kopfgroße Brocken auf einen Haufen auf dem Boden der Kammer zu legen. Rees beobachtete den Maulwurf einige Minuten lang bei seiner Arbeit. Rund um die Grabwerkzeuge, die Radachsen und die Punkte, wo die Körbe angebracht waren, waren grobe Schweißspuren zu sehen; außerdem wies die Verkleidung des Maulwurfs lange, dünne Schrammen auf, an denen klar zu erkennen war, wo vor langer Zeit die Instrumente abmontiert worden waren.
