Evolution did not change the amphibians too much—modern amphibians are still tied to water. Just like this paddle tail newt, ancient amphibians survived on both land and sea; they were the first animals to survive for extended periods outside the water (iStock). When did reptiles first evolve from amphibians? It is thought that during the Carboniferous period, a group of amphibians gave rise to the reptiles. The first reptiles were small, lizard-sized animals, but they had many differences from their amphibian ancestors, including waterproof skin and thick-shelled eggs.

Over a period of time, they evolved and adapted to the water again. Their legs gradually evolved back into fins and flippers; eyes adapted to seeing underwater; and bodies became streamlined for better speed in the water. In addition, they could no longer lay their eggs on land. Thus, they evolved a way of producing living young within their bodies, a process called ovoviviparous. The Ichthyosaurs, or “fish lizards,” were the most fishlike true reptiles. 29 Though it looks much like modern fish do today, the Ichthyosaur was still a reptile, and one of the first true reptiles to live in the water exclusively (iStock).

More formally, they are capitalized (Early, Middle, and Late), or sometimes (Lower, Middle, and Upper) and include subdivisions within those groupings. The following lists a general interpretation of the Triassic 39 epochs (although note that many researchers use slightly different notations; for example, many do not list the Rhaetian Age): Triassic Period Epoch Age Millions of Years Ago (approximate) Early Olenekian Induan Ladinian Anisian Rhaetian Norian Carnian 245–242 250–245 234–227 242–234 210–205 221–210 227–221 Middle Late What did the Triassic period signify?
