When you encounter fire, a risk assessment is critical. The first thing you must do is evaluate the size of the fire against what you hope to accomplish, be it extinguishment or a rescue. There is no benefit in putting yourself and others at risk to try to save what is already lost. There is one philosophy that says if you put out the fire, a lot of the other associated problems, such as destruction and life safety issues, go away. If you deem it safe and appropriate to try to extinguish the fire, use safe practices and put that fire out.
Part of the rescue operation should be ensuring that rescuers have what is needed to perform their task. Prepare backup teams to be ready to replace the existing team or teams.
Seek shelter immediately if you identify any of these signs: dark, often greenish clouds, a wall cloud, a cloud of debris, roaring noise, or a funnel cloud. Identify shelter. Know where you and your family can safely go when a tornado warning is given. It can be your basement, crawl space, or a small interior room on the lowest level. Expect high winds. Remove dead or decaying trees and shrubs near your house. Secure outside furniture and anything else that can become a projectile. Consider using mulch rather than rock for landscaping, due to it being less dangerous in a high-wind situation.
