The tobacco workers’ campaign also elevated the status of SNYC in the eyes of the local community. The group now had tangible evidence that it was capable of successfully acting on its resolutions. The momentum established within its first year carried into SNYC’s second conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the spring of 1938. Over three hundred delegates, including fifty white delegates, represented communities from across the South. The assembled group was almost exactly half men and half women who were mostly between the ages of eighteen to twenty-five.
The group illustrated two of the reformist phenomena of the era, including youth activism and the organizing of the Communist Party, though SNYC was not directly administered by the party. Awareness of global events fostered the group’s perspective on colonial freedom and curbing the spread of fascism. 30 · The Path to the Greater, Freer, Truer World A Black-Labor-Left Coalition: SNYC, 1937–1941 Frederick Douglass, best remembered as an eloquent abolitionist and a father of the nineteenth-century black freedom movement, worked on the docks in Maryland as a young man.
In his memoir Farmer recalls borrowing his father’s car for the long, dusty road trip from Texas through the Deep South with two colleagues. In a moving recollection, Farmer recounts the indignities of Jim Crow segregation they encountered on their journey. ”42 Many of those who responded to the call had certainly gone Origins · 31 through similar ordeals to convene in Richmond and were hoping to curtail the daily humiliations of the segregation system. Support for the youth congress came from many camps, which underscored the multiplicity of viewpoints held by the delegates.
