It was a bitter cold winter; there were long, hard frosts and heavy gales. Jim's father was not well and Jim and his mother worked hard all day and evening. One grey January morning, the captain was walking on the beach, his breath hanging like smoke. Jim's mother was upstairs with Jim's father when a tall, pale stranger entered the parlor; two fingers of his left hand were missing. He didn't seem to be a sailor, yet he had a sense of the sea about him. He asked for rum and also for "Bill," saying that the man whom he was looking for had a cut on one cheek.
At first, he was a quiet man. During the day, Jim recalls, he watched the sea through a telescope and, at night, he drank rum and sat by the fire. He said little, usually asking only a single question: had any seafaring men been passing by? Whenever a sailor did stay at the inn, the old man would look at him through a curtained door before coming into the parlor. This was strange behavior, for sure, but Jim understood: the old man paid the boy a small sum of money each month if he would watch for ''a seafaring man with one leg'' and let him know the moment he appeared.
Jim dodged and struck Hands across the chest with the tiller. Just forward of the main-mast, he stopped, drew a pistol and let the hammer fall. There was no flash nor was there a sound. Hands moved fast, but the boy's reflexes were quicker. He was deftly avoiding the coxswain's knife when the ship rolled over to the port side until the deck was at a forty-five degree angle. Both men were thrown forward, Jim springing into the mizzen shrouds and not drawing a breath Page 33 until he was seated on the cross-trees.
