5. When applied to motivational systems theory, the concept of fractals, that is, the reiteration of self-similarity across domains of scale and time, can help explain the retention of a sense of continuity and the sense of identity across continuous fluctuations of mental states and epochs of life (Chapter 4). 6. Empathic sensing into the state of mind of another invariably includes the making of inferences about intentions and goals (Chapter 5). 7. Inferences are made both in blink-like rapidity, often out of awareness, and in more deliberate intuitive, nonreflective, or fully reflective modes (Chapters 5 and 7).
Communication, however … is interwoven into all caregiver-infant exchanges long before symbolic processing by the baby is possible. Talking with and to a baby not only consolidates attachment but also builds intuitive communicative capacities prior to words themselves becoming the medium for the exchange of meaning. (pp. 13–14) Thus, from the beginning communication is inherently relational. The interlinking of communication and relationship is attested to by the finding of attachment researchers that the strategies (secure, ambivalent, and avoidant) of attachment in the preverbal period are integral to forms of speech (coherent and cooperative, preoccupied, or dismissive) that older children and adults use when responding to questions about their attachments.
In Chapter 4 we propose a novel way to account for the ability to maintain a sense of continuity and sameness of self by drawing on the concept of fractals, a particular aspect of complexity theory. We will apply the fractal attributes of self-similarity and invariance across scale and time to motivational systems. We will demonstrate the role played in the processing of each system by the foundational subsystems of perception, cognition, memory, affect, and recursive awareness. In Chapter 5 we will take up the making of inferences.
